Many learners choose an English course by its title and discover later that it was too easy, too hard, or aimed at a different goal. A few minutes of preparation before you register usually saves weeks of frustration. This guide is general information to help you compare courses; the details of any course should always be confirmed with the training provider.
Start with your goal. Do you want to speak with confidence in daily life, understand films and lessons, write professional emails, prepare for a job interview, or study for an exam? Conversation courses focus on speaking and listening, grammar courses build the rules behind correct sentences, and business English focuses on the language of meetings, emails and presentations. Writing your goal in one sentence makes the choice much easier.
Then find your level. English levels are often described with the common European scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (advanced). You do not need to memorise it; what matters is to be honest about what you can do today: introduce yourself, hold a short conversation, follow a simple text, or write a short paragraph. Ask the provider whether there is a short placement test or a call to place you, because joining a group that matches your level matters more than the course title.
Look at the outline. A good outline tells you how many lessons there are, how long each one lasts, what each unit covers, and how much time is spent on practice rather than only on explanation. Ask whether you will speak and be corrected, whether there are exercises after each lesson, and whether recordings are available if you miss a session.
Check the format that fits your life: online or in person, live sessions or recorded lessons, morning or evening groups, and whether the pace suits the time you can really give each week. A modest schedule that you keep is better than an ambitious one that you drop after two weeks.
Finally, ask practical questions before you pay: what the total cost is, what exactly it includes, what happens if you need to postpone, and what you will receive at the end of the course, if anything. Get the answers in writing and register only when you are comfortable with them.
